The Tattie Holidays

What better way to start the traditional tattie holidays than lifting your own home-grown potatoes, like this massive specimen that I unearthed yesterday:

But there’s a bit of a story to here.  A couple of years ago we began composting our kitchen waste: vegetable peelings, tea bags, egg shells and the like.  Somewhere amongst the waste, there must have been lurking a potato, perhaps one that had been frost damaged or had started to rot.  This spring, the waste had composted down enough to dig into the vegetable patch then, to my surprise, between the sprouts and peas a potato plant began growing. I just left it and have now reaped a bumper, if unexpected, crop of potatoes.  Who said growing your own vegetables was hard…
